MS Consultancy conducted an appraisal workshop on July 4, 2024, at the Getfam Hotel in Addis Ababa aimed at addressing and enhancing the Chefe Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP). This session brought together technical experts from MS Consultancy, client representatives, and stakeholders from the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority (AWSSA) to evaluate the plant’s current challenges and propose effective rehabilitation solutions.
The Chefe Sub-Catchment Sewerage and Wastewater project encompasses a comprehensive sewerage system covering the entire sub-catchment and a wastewater treatment plant at the Chefe site. By 2030, it is expected to serve a population of 146,360 people and handle a daily wastewater flow of 25,000m³. The project is divided into two phases, with Phase 1 addressing current and Phase 2 future wastewater flows. The workshop concentrated on Phase 1, which MS Consultancy has been tasked with rehabilitating and upgrading, including preparing detailed designs and tender documents.
The workshop began with an opening speech by MS Consultancy’s Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Desalegn Getachew, who addressed the project’s challenges and emphasized efforts to diagnose root causes and propose solutions. Following this, the consultant’s specialists—Mr. Nibert Anteneh, Mr. Rufael Redie, and Mr. Tilahun Misgana—delivered presentations on sanitary, structural, and electromechanical new design and rehabilitation works, outlining crucial strategies aimed at enhancing plant operations.
Following the presentations, stakeholders actively participated in a thorough question-and-answer session chaired by Mr. Nibret Anteneh, with attendance from client representatives Mr. Jemal Rashid and Mr. Debebe Mulleta. Their engagement ensured that all concerns and feedback regarding the plant’s operations were addressed and documented.
The workshop concluded successfully with MS Consultancy and the client agreeing to incorporate stakeholder feedback into the detailed design report. This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards improving wastewater management and environmental sustainability in Addis Ababa’s Chefe sub-catchment.
