In a significant step toward rebuilding essential services in Ethiopia’s conflict-affected regions, MS Consultancy has partnered with UNICEF to implement Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure projects in the Afar and Tigray regions.
The collaboration involves delivering comprehensive institutional consultancy services, including assessments, feasibility studies, detailed design, and construction supervision of WASH systems in the towns of Edaga-Arbi and Freweyni in Tigray, and Kaluwan in the Afar Regional State. The initiative is financed by the German Government through KfW Development Bank, with UNICEF serving as the fund manager.
The contract was officially signed on May 6, 2025. To mark the commencement of the project, kickoff meetings were held in Mekelle, Tigray, on May 12, and in Semera, Afar, on May 15. In Tigray, the meeting brought together key stakeholders, including UNICEF WASH specialists Mr. Basazin Minda and Mr. Philip Ptiend, and Ato Towelde Gebre Tsadik, Head of the Tigray Regional Water Bureau. In Afar, the kickoff was attended by Ato Sani Ismail, Deputy Head of the Afar Water Bureau; UNICEF WASH specialist Mr. Basazin Minda; and Dr. Beshah Mogess, among others.
The project aims to support the recovery and resilience of towns affected by the recent conflict by delivering technically sound rehabilitation plans and sustainable water supply system designs. It is expected to directly benefit thousands of households, enhancing access to clean water and improving public health outcomes in the target areas. The design phase will span six months, after which MS Consultancy will proceed with the construction supervision phase, ensuring quality control, site inspections, and compliance with technical standards throughout implementation.
This collaboration marks a meaningful step toward restoring essential services and strengthening community resilience in conflict-affected areas. MS Consultancy is honored to support UNICEF’s efforts by contributing its technical expertise to an initiative that aligns so closely with our mission to deliver sustainable, impactful solutions. Projects like this underscore the importance of accessible water and sanitation services in improving lives and building a more resilient future for all.
