The Adama Town Water Supply and Sanitation Improvement Project (ATWSSIP) has reached a significant milestone with the initial delivery of water to Adama. On February 27, 2025, the Adama City Mayor, City Council representatives, and the House Speaker visited the project site to recognize this achievement, assess ongoing progress, and discuss the next steps.
The project, designed to enhance water access and sanitation services for Adama’s growing population, is still ongoing. Only 1 km remains to be completed at the SAR-01 washout location before full operational capacity is reached, ensuring a stable and long-term supply.
During the visit, project engineers provided an update on the system’s technical progress and outlined the remaining steps toward full operationalization. Water is sourced from the Collector Reservoir in Mojo and transported to Adama through a sophisticated system that includes a 4 km collector pipeline and a 12 km transmission line—covering a total distance of 16 km from the Mojo well field. This remarkable feat has been achieved using two high-capacity submersible pumps located at Boreholes 24 and 23, ensuring a steady and reliable water supply to the city.
At this stage, the project is operating at partial capacity, with only two of the planned 13 wells currently supplying water to Adama. These two boreholes, with a combined capacity of 13,000 m³/day, provide an essential initial supply, marking a significant step toward full implementation.
The ATWSSIP has been a key focus of MS Consultancy’s water infrastructure development efforts, as part of its broader mission to enhance water supply systems across Ethiopia. The project involves not only improving water distribution but also strengthening sanitation infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability and resilience.
Previous phases of the project have included extensive assessments, feasibility studies, and engineering design to optimize efficiency and minimize environmental impact. With MS Consultancy’s expertise in hydrology, hydraulic modeling, and water resource management, the project has successfully navigated challenges such as terrain constraints and pumping system optimization.
The visit by the city’s leadership underscores the importance of this project in addressing water security and improving living conditions in Adama. The ongoing efforts reflect the commitment of all stakeholders to sustainable urban development and enhanced public health services.
MS Consultancy is proud to be part of this transformative project, contributing technical expertise and project management to support the successful implementation of the ATWSSIP. As the final section nears completion, residents of Adama can look forward to improved water accessibility and sanitation infrastructure that will benefit the community for years to come.
